Previously the Fells Point “Privateer Festival,” the Fells Point Maritime Heritage Festival is back for it’s 15th year on April 27th from 11am to 7pm in the heart of Fells Point. Celebrate Baltimore’s maritime prowess and enjoy an educational land invasion of living history with live music on two stages, historic ships & tours, interactive demonstrations and reenactors, comedic skits and kids programming, play with parrots, gaze at living mermaids, shop at maritime merchant booths, sip grog, taste grub, join the rum punch stroll and more!

Oil Pulling!

Today’s skincare tip deals with the topic of oil pulling. In this installment, the focal point highlights the purpose and benefits of this method of therapy.

What is oil pulling?

Oil Pulling Therapy is an ancient Ayurveda natural remedy. It involves pulling or swishing oil in the mouth for oral and systemic health benefits and is considered to be the oldest form of health care in the world. The knowledge of Ayurveda spread out from India.

Many medical testimonies express that oil pulling frees up the immune system, reduces stress, curtails internal inflammation and aids well-being.

 

Benefits of oil pulling

The purpose of oil pulling is to get rid of the oil-soluble toxins in the body’.

Toxins and bacteria in the body build up in the mouth and that swishing or holding oil in the mouth will draw out these impurities or wash them from the mouth. Once the swishing is complete, the oil is spit out into a sink or trash basket.

Oil pulling is also used for dental purposes. Many claim that it strengthens gums, whitens teeth and eliminates plaque.

 

The ADA does not recommend oil pulling as either a supplementary oral hygiene practice, or as a replacement for standard oral health behaviors due to limited studies on the subject.

What type of oil should I use?

Original practitioners of oil pulling used sunflower and sesame oils.

The top two oils were sesame and coconut. Both oils work great but, as you dig deeper with regards to the desired outcome, the coconut oil ranks supreme.  Sesame oil provides omega 6 but, on a regular we obtain omega 6 fats.  Coconut oil does more, both as anti-bacterial and anti-viral qualifying this oil a better fit for oral hygiene.  It is a fact that coconut oil mixed with sodium bicarbonate (Baking Soda) makes for powerful toothpaste and also strengthens teeth against decay.  Research was conducted at the

 What are the steps involved with oil pulling?

Step 1:  First thing in the morning on an empty stomach and before drinking any liquids put 1-2 teaspoons of oil into your mouth.  I prefer 2 teaspoons of organic coconut oil.

Step 2:  Swish the coconut oil around your mouth for about 15-20 minutes and remember not to swallow, the oil is loaded with toxins.

Once you have reached the 15-20 minute mark be sure to spit the oil into the waste basket to prevent clogged drainage.

Step 3:  Rinse your mouth well with warm water and salt to remove excess oil that may still linger in your mouth.  Once you have rinsed, brush your teeth as you normally would and rinse a second time.

A dry brush exfoliation can be done in the morning before you shower, It eliminates dead skin cells and allows the skin to detox (skin is the largest organ of elimination).

Ladies and Gentlemen; a good dry brush exfoliation also improves lymph and blood circulation and decreases puffiness by, moving lymph fluid to the lymph nodes eliminating waist.  The human body naturally does this, but dry brushing speeds up the process and at the same time boosts circulation, delivering oxygenated blood to the skin and other organs, which helps them do their job more effectively.  The extra benefit is that the gentle pressure is calming the nervous system.  When choosing your brush pick softly, you’ll need a nice soft natural bristle.  I recommend that you start with the feet and work your way up the body.

Girls Night Out 2014!

Fell Point Fun Festival 2014
